The Loren Corey Eiseley Historical Marker

The Loren Eiseley Society has received approval to place a historical marker for Loren Eiseley in his childhood neighborhood. On the initiative of the Loren Eiseley Society, History Nebraska will produce a sign to be placed along the creek in Irvingdale Park. This is where young Loren would play and collect specimens for his homemade aquariums. This is being done in cooperation with Lincoln Parks and Recreation and the Irvingdale Neighborhood Association. We hope to have an unveiling event when the time comes, which is still many months away. It is several blocks from his childhood home. The marker's inscription will read as follows:

LOREN EISELEY

Anthropologist, poet, and nature writer Loren Eiseley (1907-1977) was raised in the nearby neighborhoods of Lincoln. As a boy he collected specimens of aquatic life from this and other local creeks and ponds to stock his homemade aquarium. His books such as The Immense Journey and The Night Country include personal narratives set in this area. His time exploring creeks such as this one inspired his most famous line: "If there is magic in this world, it is contained in water."

The cost of this historical marker is $2,700. Please consider making a donation to the Loren Eiseley Society to support this effort.
